Counting Down the Top 25 Christmas Movies: #14 Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

Post by Kal-El »

Coming in at #14 on our countdown of the greatest Christmas movies of all time is the 1988 holiday comedy classic, Ernest Saves Christmas. This charming film stars Jim Varney in one of his most iconic roles as the lovable and bumbling Ernest P. Worrell. Directed by John R. Cherry III, the movie combines slapstick humor, heartwarming moments, and a quirky plot that continues to delight audiences in 2024.

The story follows Ernest as he unwittingly becomes Santa Claus’s (Douglas Seale) unlikely ally. Santa has traveled to Orlando, Florida, in search of a successor to carry on his legacy. However, obstacles arise when Santa’s magical sack goes missing and he encounters a skeptical and jaded world. Along the way, Ernest teams up with Harmony Star (Noelle Parker), a teenage runaway with a tough exterior but a heart of gold. Together, they help Santa overcome challenges and ensure that Christmas isn’t canceled.

Jim Varney shines in this role, using his trademark comedic timing and physical comedy to bring Ernest to life. His earnest (pun intended) nature and determination to do good make him an endearing and memorable protagonist. Douglas Seale delivers a warm and heartfelt performance as Santa Claus, embodying the kindness and wisdom of the legendary character. Noelle Parker brings depth to the role of Harmony, offering a redemptive arc that resonates with viewers.

The film’s humor, while rooted in its 1980s context, remains accessible and enjoyable in 2024. Varney’s antics, from his misadventures at the airport to his over-the-top disguises, continue to generate laughs. More importantly, the movie’s core message about belief, redemption, and the true spirit of Christmas transcends generations.

Despite being over three decades old, Ernest Saves Christmas holds up thanks to its blend of comedy, nostalgia, and heartwarming storytelling. Its low-budget charm and quirky humor evoke a sense of simplicity often missing in modern holiday films. The movie has become a favorite for families seeking a wholesome and entertaining Christmas tradition.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Ernest Saves Christmas is a delightful reminder of the magic of the holiday season. It’s a movie that stands the test of time, proving that a little humor and a lot of heart can create a Christmas classic.
